Toastmasters Humour, by Darren LaCroix

Speech by Toastmasters World Champion Speaker, Darren LaCroix

We have to begin to think about our Humorous Contest comming the 3rd week of September. There are many Humorous Contest winners speeches on YouTube to look at and study. There are also many StandUp Comedy examples you may look at.

The web is a great place, to look for and also to publish your own speech

Toastmasters Table Topics styles

Yes, the one who told a humorous story would win! Would entretain. Have some stories ready!
There is not only one way that is good to answer at the Table Topics, where questions are given the last minute before you speak for 1 or sometimes 2 minutes, and more we practice, more we learn.

Zhanna now Advanced Communicator Bronze!

Inspirational speech
After she finished the Competent Communicator Manual and became Competent Communicator, Zhanna did not stop!

She chose first the Humorous speeches, followed by the Persuasive speeches, each have 5 projects in it, and in her enthusiasm she just finished all the ten!  She is now Advanced Speaker Bronze!

On the way, she learned new ways of speaking, but even more importantly she gained experience and confidence.

Well done!

Lewisham Speakers, Great Start to a New Toastmasters Year

Some of publicWednesday, 6th July, in their new improved meeting location, St Margaret Church, Lee (where they meet every 1st & 3rd Wednesday of month) a joint Lewisham – Meridian Speakers Meeting with members from Bromley Croydon and Purley also attending a excellent turnout for area 35.

We also had the pleasure of  meeting and talking to our new Division H Governor Richard Murray who supported the event.
Freddie Speaking
It was the first opportunity that Freddie Daniels, district governor for education and marketing had delivered his famous “The Art of Effective Evaluation” a master classes in the skills and techniques on how to evaluate effectively for clubs in Division H. Freddie delivered the workshop with dexterity, energy and enthusiasm, lots of interaction with the audience. All present had lots of information to take away with them and practice in there own clubs

Berkeley speakout meeting-07After the main Presentation Manthe Penton-Harrap from Berkeley Square Speakers Club was our Target speaker, giving a great nr 8 speech “Stress Less”. Three volunteers from different clubs had a chance to put into action what they had learnt giving Manthe constructive and motivational feed back.

A fruitful meeting finished with fruits that all present will not forget.

The meeting was closed by Lewisham Speakers president, Julie Kertesz who thanked Freddie and all of those who took part. Lewisham Speakers are delighted to begin the new Toastmaster year at such a high level in our new location.

Echos from our Masterclass of Evaluation

The 6th July we had a Masterclass of Evaluation by F. Danniels,  with great success.

Today, Julie, our President, went to Meridian Speakers meeting, where she is member also, and a number of Toastmasters who participated to it told her they loved it and learned from it.

They even decided to repeat it again at the Meridians in Greenwich for those who could not attend the 6th. That says all, does not it?

Two years ago

Happy for winning (photo W. Marshal) We will have our Humorous and Tabletopics Contest, the third Wednesday of September.

In September, 2009, two years ago, Julie, our recent president won the Humorous Contest in our club, while she had only a few speeches behind her. Six.

Chris, then Division Governor, and now our club's Mentor, and active member, founder of our Lewisham club, gave presenting her in this image her first place.

She could hardly believe then that she got the first place, when many Advanced Toastmasters competed too at the contest.

It is not how long you have been Toastmaster but how much you make the listeners laugh...

You can winn also now, begin preparing!

Julie, Katy, Philip, Zandria, Vivienne, Dave presents at Area training for Club Committee members.

A suggested by Peter, Area Governor, we discussed between us about Membership, and took some decisions on the spot.
  • We decided to welcome all Toastmaster Members from August with Name Badges, and to give a Name etiquette also to our guests. We decided to put again at the entrance a new Guests Book.
  • To follow up on our member's goals then help each achieve it.
  • Contact them less often by email, but more by phone.
  • We will not only welcome, as ususal, but also introduce our guests
  • We will introduce new members to all the meeting after they join, 'induct' them.
  • We will celebrate Achievements of each toastmaster as soon as possible.

First meeting in the new Place

First meeting in our new location, at the "Crypt" of St. Margaret's Church in Brandram Road, Lee.

Not only there is a bus station just before the Church, 54 and 108 for me and 89 for others, but also pleanty of parking place in the courtyard and accross it. And pleanty of place to sit and speak.

Tony received a Presidential Award : she found us that great place we are from now on.

Sally was the Toastmaster of the evening, and prepared it excellently, making sure all that took a role were there - and when not, replacing them.

Yes, four speeches are quite a lot, and I over run with the time, but we did have a guest speaker from Tube Talk giving an easy to understand Technical Speech.

Brian, our newest member gave an amusing Icebreaker, without even using notes and making us know him better, too. Eric, won the best speaker award, with a story / speach about Colin the Cabby, interior - or exterior voice trying to discurage him and giving us courage not to listen to negative voices. Philip finished with his speach Faith, good idea in this place, was it not, his Advanced Communicator Silver.

We did finish with this speech our 9th point earning a new rubban for our flag from Toastmasters.
With 8 new members this year, four Competent Communicators, two Advanced Communicators Silver, and dues paid in time, officers declared in time, we are one of first 5 clubs from more then 80 to obtain those points. It is not the point or ruban that count but all the work behind it.

Our Table Topics session was of course about Place, celebrating the new place.

That is not all, we have two new members! Welcome! And three guests, who we hope will be back and decide to join us too, and begun their journey of learning together with us.

Sorry that the time passed so fast, we had then to rush home, this time leaving the place we were sadly, but in two weeks we will be back. We will try to reserve 30 minutes at the end to speak more with each other. So many great people in our club!
